So after reading and hearing so many negative messages about Hicksville, I've been researching other areas. If you were deciding between Bethpage and Farmingdale, which would you choose and why?

From what I've seen Bethpage looks really nice.

Farmingdale.... There are nice areas of farmingdale, ok areas of Farmingdale, and bad areas of farmingdale. School district there varies too from farmingdale, I hear some amityville, and half hollow hills, maybe plainedge too?

Definately Bethpage. Overall it is consitantly nice, while Farmingdale is mostly nice but with some bad pockets.

Farmingdale is not a bad choice, you may need to do more research into the specific areas, while Bethpage, whether in Bethage S.D. or Island Trees S.D. is nice.

In my opinion they are both extremely similar areas. Both very much middle class towns dominated by basically good folks. Both also share the wonderful Bethpage State Park. Both have a nice sense of community, along with plenty of community activities (sports leagues and such).

Farmingdale is mostly nice, although there is some area that you might like to stay away from. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions as it relates to specific areas of Farmingdale. Farmingdale does have a nice little downtown, and I encourage you to take a stroll down there to get a feel for the area. Commercial areas of Farmingdale are dominated by Main St. and the 110 area, with plenty of shopping and activities. There is also a very nice library in Farmingdale, if you like that sort of thing. Additionally, TOBAY's Allen Park is a small but nice recreation area with ballfields, tennis courts, children's play areas, etc. As far as schools, most Farmingdale residents will attend Farmingdale Schools, however a smaller portion will attend Plainedge or HHH.

Bethpage also has some really nice restaurants and commercial areas. Some of these commercial areas have homes very close by and that may not be where you want to be. Bethpage is also home to the very nice Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Bethpage did have a wonderful TOBAY park that includes a pool and skating rink, unfortunately, it is and will be closed for a while. The majority of Bethpage residents will attend Bethpage schools, however a smaller portion, I believe, will attend Plainview-Old Bethpage or Island Trees.

Overall, I think either area is a fine choice. It may come down to the best house that you find for your $$$, and/or specific things what you may be looking for. As for me, I chose Farmingdale many moons ago, primarily because I liked what I got for my $$ back then, and I do not regret it.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Bethpage

While the "Bethpage, NY 11714" ZIP Code postal zone does extend into the Hamlet of Levittown in the Town of Hempstead (and, hence into the Island Trees School District), the Hamlet of Bethpage is completely within the Town of Oyster Bay.

For those who may not be familiar with Bethpage:

Previously known as Central Park, Bethpage is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the central part of the Town of Oyster Bay, in the east part of Nassau County, along the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Bethpage in the Town of Oyster Bay is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of Plainview; on the east by the Hamlet of Old Bethpage and the Village of Farmingdale; on the south by the Hamlet of Plainedge; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Levittown (the Oyster Bay/Hempstead town line) and the Hamlet of Hicksville.

The Hamlet of Bethpage has a different border than does the "Bethpage, NY 11714" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Bethpage, NY 11714" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Bethpage and a place can be in the Hamlet of Bethpage and have other than a "Bethpage, NY 11714" mailing address): places with a "Bethpage, NY 11714" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Bethpage are in the Hamlet of Plainedge and the Hamlet of Levittown in the Town of Hempstead; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Bethpage that have a "Hicksville, NY 11801" and "Plainview, NY 11803" mailing address.

Default "Farmingdale, NY 11735" ZIP Code postal zone

"Farmingdale" can be confusing because the majority of places with a "Farmingdale, NY 11735" mailing address are NOT in the Village of Farmingdale, and are not even in Nassau County:

............................................acres
......Village of Farmingdale...........696
......Farmingdale, NY 11735.......2,708*

* This is the portion in Nassau County only; the majority of the area of the "Farmingdale, NY 11735" ZIP Code postal zone is in the Town of Babylon in Suffolk County.

In addition to the "Farmingdale, NY 11735" addresses in the Hamlet of East Farmingdale and the Hamlet of Wyandanch in the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, about 3 of every 4 Farmingdale addresses in Nassau County are also not in the Village of Farmingdale and are in the Hamlet of South Farmingdale and the Hamlet of Plainedge.
