So I came home to a notice from the dept of Assesment, saying that an assessor missed me, that they were here to conduct an on-site inspection for “building permit inspection “ anyone know anything about this. If they come back should I let them in, I did do work on my house over a year now which I did get a permit.

check the phone number on the official webpage and make sure it’s legit. Then call them ask what they want.

Verify it's not a scam.
That said...Do not let any of those clowns in your house or even on your property without a warrant.

Did you get a final inspection on the work authorized by the permit? If not, that is probably what it is for. You should have either a certificate of completion or certificate of occupancy, if they did a final inspection unless there was a problem upon inspection.

Yea I did I got the certificate, the inspector came and did a walk through and I got the co in the mail over a year ago. I was nervous because I know if they found anything else that wasn’t pertaining to the work I did they could fail me. I really don’t want them in my house because I know I did some other stuff that the inspector did comment on. He just came in and check the work that was on the permit and left and said everything was fine. There was a couple of inspectors.(plumbing electrical and then the main guy who signed off on the co

Well, sounds like you need to make a call and find out what's up. Still, do not let anyone in until you figure out what's going on.

If it’s legit I would tell them you have a CO from the work you did so thanks but no thanks. It could be a scam though. Make sure the number on the letter matches the actual town number.

I'm not sure what the normal timeframe protocol is, but my experience was that when I was doing work on my house, the department of assessment stopped by at one point to assess % complete at a year end for tax purposes. They also came by after the work was completed and CO issued to verify for assessment purposes and update their picture.

Ours was not a full new assessment at the time(it has been in the new assessment), but effectively we had a remodel permit and fell within the guidelines of that for taxable sqftage.

This was 7 years ago town of hempstead.

honestly these people don't bite, just talk to them. as far as letting them in, it seems that you've already let the ones that matter in. Assessment, will be updated based upon the plans, they'll visually verify, but I doubt there would be much movement based upon finishes. they're not the ones hunting for sheds or AC units.

I wouldnt let them in. A year after work is done is way too long for a visit to be relevant to that co which you already got. They are fishing and have no authority to enter your home and snoop around. Nothing but bad news could possibly follow. If you dont even know why they want in, thats a pretty good indication they dont belong there,
