Is there any consensus on how the average tax payer will be affected after the reassessment? I'm paying $11k now in Nassau county in a 20 year old house. And this is supposed to be "phased in" over 5 years, meaning my taxes may increase 2 years from now or 5 years from now - no one knows?

11k? What is it a shoebox?
20 years old is still pretty new.
You should be in the 14-15k range.

There should be a breakdown of your tax projections based on pre-assessment, post assessment w/ out phase in and post-assessment with phase in on the My Nassau Property page. The 6th blue link (farthest right) is Taxpayer Protection Plan info. It has your tax notices with all the TPP info.

LI has some of the best schools in the country, hence the high taxes.
Want cheap taxes? Watch school quality go down
Taxes on my old house in Garden City were less than $5000 a year in the mid 1990s. We looked at other houses where the taxes were under $4000 at the same time. Tell me how much better the schools have gotten since then. Taxes on my old house are around $18 right now. You could fund a nice private school education with that money and I can assure you LI public schools are not close to private schools.
You knock down your house and rebuild it twice as big and your school taxes will double. Does that REALLY make sense to you? Really?
In other parts of the country, the taxes get divided up amongst all the gov't run institutions. Is it a perfect system? No. But in other parts of the country the schools are expected to make a budge and stick to it because new construction isn't going to magically swoop in and give an extra million per year to throw at the teachers' salaries and bennies. You know that's where 2/3 of your school tax money goes, right? It's not going to physical plant, curriculum or anything for the kids.
When all is said and done, the county taxes in Nassau are not that outrageous taking into account the value of the houses. You'd pay close to that in most other parts of the country for the same value of the house. BUt the idea that you're getting any value at all for what you pay in SCHOOL taxes is insane.
I still don’t understand how you people can justify paying these taxes.
Whether you can “afford” them or not.
You are still being totally raped financially.
If a hotdog is normally $3, why on earth would you pay $20 for the same exact hotdog? Because you can?
It’s just plain stupid.
The new Country Pointe homes are $40k taxes? Why haven't I seen any relief in the rest of the town for recent years then? Where's all the money going? Why wasn't that burden there before and is now? It's a small area in the grand scheme with no kids in schools. This taxation and thievery by those it's going to is all a flaming pile of horse manure.
