The Biden administration is imposing a vehicle mileage tax on Americans — as a way to fund a multi-trillion-dollar infrastructure plan set to be announced by President Biden, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Friday.
“I think that shows a lot of promise… If we believe in that so-called user-pays principle, the idea that part of how we pay for roads is you pay based on how much you drive,” Buttigieg said on CNBC during an interview.
“The gas tax used to be the obvious way to do it; it’s not anymore… So, a so-called vehicle miles traveled tax or a mileage tax, whatever you want to call it, could be the way to do it.”
The levy would tax drivers on the number of miles they travel, as opposed to the amount of gasoline they consume, which is no longer a reliable stream of income with so many electric cars on the road.

The big push for “green” vehicles should lead to less gallons purchased. This will keep the trough full
Where's the $ going? Paying for free medical, free housing, free EVRYTHING!!!!!!!!! Why work, and bust your a$$? This country is in serious trouble. How do we pay back all this stimulus $? All the stupid extra unemployment? MORE TAXES!!!!
WE pay for services and goods, make sense, then the question is the wealth tax,are the wealthy using more of our govt services and goods?
Do they beat each other up and call the police?
Do they get free medical care?
Do they eat more and waste more?
Do they get free ride on Air Force One?
They haven't raised the gas tax for nearly 40 yrs, meanwhile roads, bridges, tunnels degrade.
More importantly, your car might last longer, less need for repairs saving you money. Some people might start carpooling or taking the train instead, so you have less traffic. Consequently, you might actually live longer due to better air. You get more time back with your family due to less time wasted in traffic and even gas money. The gov't saves money due to all the healthcare issues associated with emissions. Companies pass this cost to consumers, so we get higher cost in goods which sucks, but progress isn't free.
It is small thinking to say; it raises taxes so lets not do anything. That's the better solution. At least he has a goal with some long term benefits that could play out well and improve our infrastructure, create jobs while improving health. Yes there are downsides but there are real downside to not doing anything.

Aww how cute. In reality it'll be a slush fund to extract wealth from the poor and rural folks who drive the most and be used to pad construction contracts for political allies, send billions overseas for wars and "gender programs" in Afghanistan, and maybe build a few bridges named after Democrats that will fall into the river well before their expected lifespan.
This country is in decline. Yet another regressive tax isn't going to fix that.

and for the person that drives to work? Not every place has great public transportation and now with covid19 cuts its worse!
oh, that person should just find a new job right? its for the greater good!
There is literally no way they can track this, the honor system will result in people lying, people will disconnect the odometer or buy a junked one and swap it before the inspection and drive 500 miles a year. Plus no way in hell he gets 10 republicans in the senate to pass this, reconciliation can't be used, 3 democrats would probably vote no. Plus he has dementia and will probably forget this next week.
