If your family becomes exhausted and tapped out, and decides to leave LI, would you follow them wherever they go? This is a far more common trait of LI living, than your insistence you'll stay no matter what.

If i had to, yes. Luckily i dont. We’re trying to get a bigger house.

Bigger house = not a necessity. Family = necessity. I cant justify some of these prices though.

Another thing is whether my job will stay remote or not.

The only people I would probably follow are my parents because I think that they would end up needing me more than some younger members of my family down the line. However my parents house is already paid off & they already said they’re going to die in it so they’re not leaving

My ancestors have been here on LI since the 1600’s - no one has left. We pretty much own the place

I’m sorry but that’s sad and scary. Lol.

But it’s good to know that there are many like you and I will be able to sale the house down the road.

What people say in their 60s and what happens in the next decades are two entirely different things. Are you looking for a bigger house to take them in, or have that option just in case? DH and I have the perspective of seeing how people start to slide as they age - even people in good health like his parents and mind. But things are no where near what they were in their 60s to what they are now in their late 80s and early 90s.

And even though my dad could afford it he got sick of the taxes once they got over $10K a year. Retirement paired with longevity can change outlooks.

But the idea that people - especially people with kids - should work 2-3 jobs just to live on LI is insane. THere's no point in doing that anywhere, actually.

To each their own, you know? I decided I didn't want to toil and sacrifice to fund other people's luxury retirements and benefits, so I moved on. dawg apparently is okay with this.

She may have to reckon with a different reality in later years, forcing her to move on. Personally, I'd encourage her parents to move to a cheaper area where they can all be together and stress less about the COL.

My parents live fine here financially as do my husband & I. There is no reason for them to move. They are not Florida/tropical ppl. My dad hates traveling anywhere off LI. They’re not leaving. Been in their house since 78.

We want a bigger house bc we have a lot more $$ now than we did 3 years ago. Our house is small & super cheap for us. We want 2 ba’s istead of the 1 we have. Looking into staying in our current house & doing renos instead of moving bc what weve seen on the market, i cant justify the taxes.

Leaving LI is not something any of us want & luckily it isnt something we are forced to do bc we can afford it.

I did work 2 jobs in my 20’s to make it here & dont regret it. Have husband now. Much easier on 2 incomes
