Thanks everyone for the advice. I had a look at my father's POA, and it does allow for real estate transactions. Also it turns out that it is the NYS short form variant, I hadn't looked since 2017 when it was granted.
As it would have to be registered the town of Brookhaven's (?) clerk for us to use it for this transaction, that would be a bit difficult as we're nearly 3500 miles away, so we'll most likely go with the option of him granting the attorney a limited POA to carry out this transaction. Still a bit of a faff, but easier than flying in a hazmat suit.
