Wasn't he offered the Lt Governor spot under Spitzer about 15 years ago? Could have had the big job already instead of Patterson, but from memory he didn't want to play second fiddle for a few years.

He’s got a grasp on reality and has avoided associating with the real wackos in his party. As a moderate LI Dem he probably has no shot in a primary but would win in a general. And would govern pretty well.

Given what’s going on with the Dem brand in DC (unpopular president, unpopular ideas/policies) he’s one of many Democrats there eyeballing the exits.

There doesn’t seem to be an issue that he deviates from the far left of the party on, including bail reform and taxes that benefit the city over LI. His rhetoric might soften or mislead depending on his audience to try to appear moderate when necessary, but his actions have consistently been in lock step in all cases where it made a difference.

That's quite the crowded field for Democrats.
Suozzi is a moderate/Centrist Dem who could appeal to voters (of both parties) who certainly don't want Hochul or Tish to win.
Then there's the NY Republican party which should be laser focused on finding a Republican candidate that appeals strongly to suburban voters ala Pataki. The NJ and VA gov races (as well as the local Nassau/Suffolk races) show that Republicans have the momentum, but is Lee Zeldin the right candidate. It's a tricky spot for a NY Republican like Zeldin who is allied with Trump, who is still generally toxic in wealthier suburban areas like Nassau/Suffolk.
If the Repubs can field a good candidate then it will likely be competitive given the issues with the Dem party. Laura Curran, a popular centrist Dem who was well liked, couldn't overcome the toxicity that having a D meant next to her name.
Suozzi likely sees an opening there for himself given the 2021 results and the mess that is going on within his party now.

According to his voting record he is party-line all the way.

Good analysis. But somebody like Suozzi will have difficulty in the primary field. Maybe he sees himself getting the sane Dem vote, like his friend Eric Adams, and is hoping that is enough in the primary.

I wouldn't hold out hope that he or anyone else would be moderate in any measurable way. Even the so-called moderates swallow the Democratic Party platform hook, line and sinker in the state. The only ones I can think of that have bucked the system nationwide - lately anyway - are Sinema (AZ) and Manchin (WV), because they come from more conservative states.

In any event there's a strong case made by journalist Michael Tracey among other that Cuomo was brought down by the far-left over the sexual harassment stuff since he was too conservative for their taste (recall when they tried to primary him with Cynthia Nixon). That story stinks to high heaven the more you look into it, but since both sides wanted him gone, few have bothered to care
