Long Island works if your routine is to commute to and from NYC, or if you will be working locally. If you don't envision yourselves expanding outside your routine, Long Island is a great place to live and you won't have to drive far for retail options.

I live in both places. IMO, I prefer Long Island to NJ. However, central NJ, near Rutgers, is very nice. There are plenty of Asian Indians in that area and you won't have problems finding stores that cater to the culture. Long Island also has a big Asian Indian population, primarily in New Hyde Park and Hicksville but others are scattered in various communities. If I had to drive to NJ from Long Island on a regular basis, I'd shoot myself first.

I had noticed there from google maps that there was an outlet mall, and theme park near Riverhead. Probably was Splish Splash. I think there is an aquarium there as well, I thought it was interesting they had all that at the very end of a very long island!

To be fair, I said central NJ. And as for several comments by many through out the forum in this regard, I would think when someone asks in LI forum about NJ, they are referring to north or north/central NJ.
NJ does indeed have the geography. It seems to have the largest geography with proximity to Manhattan. But ...
As someone posted in a different thread, for instance Brooklyn would stand on its own in any setting. Not much in NJ is spectacular. Very functional and utilitarian though.

The NJ shore is nice in the summer, and the Palisades in the autumn. And NJ is convenient if you want to drive to out of town destinations like Philadelphia, DC, Poconos, Lancaster, or even upstate NY. But in many parts (and usually the more affordable parts) it can be a long drive to access amenities like nice supermarkets and ethnic supermarkets, COSTCOs, and shopping malls.
Honestly LI is a lot more fun than NNJ. You at least have beaches, and boating. In NNJ, you have to leave go to the shore, or PA/NY for mountains.

I get you are saying that in NJ beaches are a bit further out, and the mountains/skiing etc may not be super close either. Anything else other than that?
Also, can someone clarify a bit about the boating? I did see some pictures of jet ski type activities in Cupsogue beach. Is this a common activity on LI Sound as well, on the north shore?

Well, granted NNJ is closer to the mountains than LI. It just that at least LI has one thing going for it being right on the water.
And you'll be in bumper to bumper traffic for every inch of it!
