Do people on the Eastern End of the Island look at this as a good or bad thing? I know in other instances like this, there have been people on both sides, but does the fact that it is offshore by 35 miles from Montauk Point help?

Also, does this help as well?

"It’s expected to provide roughly 130 megawatts, enough power for about 70,000 homes, when it begins operations, which is currently expected at the end of 2023. Its transmission system will connect to the electric grid on Long Island, making it the state’s first offshore wind farm and jumpstarting the offshore wind industry there."

This has been in the works for years... it's a huge, long process.

It's not that near the east end. It's a bigger issue for Martha's Vineyard.

It's for NY, but its location is out of state (3 nautical miles from shore) in federally controlled waters south southeast of Newport RI (really south of the RI/MA border), beyond the 12 nautical mile territorial water zone but within the 24 nautical mile contiguous zone of waters.

Rather have a new, state-of-the-art nuclear plant to replace Indian Point. Renewable sources, other than hydroelectric (and every viable body of water we have is already dammed), cannot supply baseline power. Thus, we end up building more gas turbines and burning biomass (trees) to meet needs, which is directly counter to environmental goals.

Worth a read if you're interested in the topic:

Would you be OK building this new, state-of-the-art nuclear plant in Nassau County?

You could build it in my basement if you want (hopefully I get some free electric out of it).

"Nimbyism" runs rampant on Long Island. I grew up there. It would not surprise me if the whole thing was built and then abandoned. Shades of the Shoreham nuke plant all over again! Maybe with one good hurricane it'll just wash away and become a reef.

Nassau-Suffolk is made of Nimbyism. That's its raison d'être.

Everywhere is made of Nimbyism. I defy you to not stumble upon the same sorts of conversations in every state/local subforum on city-data. It defies class, race, income, etc. - no one wants people, places, or things that they consider undesirable moving in next door to them. If they did, our preachy elites would live sandwiched between the airport and a homeless shelter instead of behind gates on Melody Lane, and our sports and music stars would stay in the ghetto.
