We are an Asian family and have a 11yr old currently in 6th grade in LIC, Queens. Want to move to a LI neighborhood close to LIRR for middle school (7th grade) or high school. I dont want to buy a house since I only want to be here for 4-6yrs). Was thinking of renting an apt or house. We have a 2yr old dog.
Do people rent in a good school district just to use the middle/high school and then move back to NYC? Would like a 2bedroom apt that allows pets. Or a house with a yard.
Thinking of New Hyde Park that is zoned for NHP or Herricks school districts, Great Neck (close to LIRR). Is FLoral Park also a good school district?
Dont want to deal with stressful high school tests for NYC high schools. But is it worth the money/effort to move to LI for 4-6yrs for the school district?
Also concerned about the effect on a child moving from a crowded, urban school district to a suburban one. Change is always difficult, and especially more for a pre-adolescent child. Moving from the bustling city with everything in walking distance to a suburban one where we have to be driven everywhere. Wondering if anyone else made the switch and how the kids adjusted.
Long Island has not historically been a place for "carpet baggers" - people who move in and rent just to use the schools. Will it work for you? Sure, it could. You seem to have some reservations beyond just finding a rental though. No one can tell you if you or your kid will be happy with the arrangement and there are always tradeoffs. Make a list of your pros and cons and go from there.
If I was in your shoes, my order of priorities would be
A) Getting the kid into one of the technical high schools. Quite prestigious and don't cost anything. No guarantee they'll get in, though (in fact the odds are they won't).
B) Private school. If you have money to rent in Long Island, you have the money to send one kid to a private high school. Prices vary wildly, but you can expect maybe $20k a year as a very rough average. Financial assistance is also often available.
C) Renting in Long Island. Expect to spend at least $3k a month for a 2 bedroom that'll allow a dog in a good school district. Easily $4-$5k for a whole house.
