Because most of those blacks and Hispanics live in Wheatley heights not Dix Hills. It’s the same district HHH.

Demographic mismatches (school/area) are common. Beyond the fact that school district names are inexact, sometimes the younger families with school kids (perhaps relatively recent arrivals) might not match the overall demographics for a town/village hamlet. (Not saying that is the case in HHH). Or, certain groups might opt for Catholic/Private schools.

Malverne village is 80% white. Malverne school district is 18% white.

Glen Cove is 55% white. The school district is 24% white.

For the bolded, a lot of that is due to Lakeview, another predominantly black and middle class community of a similar size being in the district: https://data.census.gov/profile/Lake...0XX00US3641003

Oyster Bay - East Norwich School District is yet another case in point as Oyster Bay is about 8% Hispanic and East Norwich is about 0% Hispanic and the schools are about 25% Hispanic.

It kills me that my kids will be in Copiague but there's no way I'm letting them live with my ex. They'll just have to toughen up. That's life.

He could have written about being initially from Brooklyn and moving to the world-famous First Suburb of Levittown. Levittown in the name of the development. It's in the township of Oyster Bay, which spans the North at the Village of Oyster Bay, established in 1661. The Development of Levittown comprises other villages and towns that are not in the Township of Oyster Bay but in The Town of Hempstead - Wantagh and Island Trees, and the portion of Potato fields now called "Levittown."

He could have written about his time in a black leather jacket-wearing gang full of street ruffians or the bland uniformity of his hometown. Or the home it represented to some of the disappointment of black and Latin GIs when they discovered that this particular post-war community was not open to them.
Hicksville exists within the Town of Oyster Bay, and OB's three syllables works much better than Hicksville's two.

Yes, he was quite correct in writing "From a town known as Oyster Bay, Long Island".

Back to the demographic theme:

Hicksville School District is now 24% white, 36% Asian, and 35% Hispanic. Certainly quite a change from Billy Joel's day. Actually quite a change over the last 15 years or so.

Hicksville is a unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Oyster Bay, so its not completely a lie.

Most white Malverne kids go to Kellenberg, St Anthonys etc because the local high school is not safe, and kids are using grandmas address in Malverne to get Hempstead and Roosevelt kids into the school.

Thats why we crossed East Norwich off our list. What a shame.
