Honestly the main reason to buy on LI is school district. I would consider FP on the Queens side, Bellerose and even Queens Village North and save a lot on property taxes.

Which is (at least partially) offset by NYC income taxes.

True, but being seniors they may be retired with less income coming in. If the OP is purchasing the house for them on LI they cant get any senior exemptions.

The son (daughter?) is planning on living with them. We don't know who will be on the deed
why houses? why not apartment esp for seniors. Great Neck, Bayside and maybe Douglaston have a few apartments. Easy to get to Flushing. Or just consider living in Flushing….or maybe Flushing North
Mineola is very centrally located and has a good LIRR station.
Thank you so much for all the new replies!
I haven't heard of Mineola until Pezman1 recommended it here. It looks like it would be a good commute for me to the city and okay drive to Flushing. Thank you, I will start looking there too!
For the question about house vs condo, I chose a house because my parents really enjoy sitting in the yard and planting flowers.
I'll be on the deed because it would be easier for me to handle the finances. I heard living in LI means I don't have to pay NYC income tax which may offset the property tax a little but then someone mentioned that there are sometimes village or town fees/taxes in addition to the base property tax, are those specific to areas that have private neighborhood facilties or specialty schools?

Be aware that living in the Village of Mineola will also add to your taxes as they are separate from the Town of N. Hempstead and the County. They are minuscule when compared to the rest of the taxes, however.
I grew up in Whitestone/Flushing, so know the area well. I still live there but spend most of my time in Nassau for various reasons.
New Hyde Park is a good place to look. It's close to Flushing by car but still a nice area. A lot of Indians live there now. It would be cheaper than Great Neck or Manhasset. There also is Floral Park, Franklin Square and Steward Manor. These areas are also nice but a little further away from Flushing than New Hyde Park (they are south).
If you don't mind going a little further East and into a mostly white area, a lot of white people from Queens have moved to places like Bethpage, Plainview and Wantagh or Merrick. I personally love Plainview, and you can probably get a nice house under $800k.

Plainview is a horrible town if you don’t need schools, it has high taxes. Bethpage has lower prices and way lower taxes same with hicksville.
