I can't speak to Aldi or Lidl but I can tell you that part of the business model for TJ's is accessibility. They want to be able to drop product and run. Check the locations of their stores. Riverhead is too far off the beaten path for them to drive to deliver product.
It's an example of LI's geographical dead-end bottom-of-the-bottle problem, especially with NYC being the cork. I imagine local retailers would be hostile to their entry into their markets, and the year-round population of the East End to support large new retail entrants is hardly what it is in the height of the summering season.

I was a life long LI’er til I retired to Delaware. We are aching for a TJ’s here, and there is one in Wilmington, but the summer traffic and no highways killed any shot of them coming here according to a former TJ’s team leader.
I don't get the attraction of Wegman's. Talk about a cult. They also have a pretty set distribution system and looks like they will be expanding south based on where they've placed their new center (Richmond, I think).
TJ and Whole Foods also like to go to affluent areas - Riverhead may be the gateway to the forks but I'm not sure either company is sold on knowing people will need to fight traffic in the summer and there's a lack of people in the winter.
