There will now be cops all over the train stations and inside the trains because long islanders are terrified to ride alone these days or get into their cars. Through the first half of 2022, major crimes on the LIRR were up by 71%! The MTA defines "major crimes" as murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny! So this is not your typical drunks! Officers will board trains at opposite ends of a station platform, and then work their way to the middle of a train, along the way having “a lot of interaction with riders,” Canine and special operations personnel will also be used! I mean, I dont take the train, it seems like only those in the lower echelons of life ride that, and for the cops to bring the dogs out, who knows what else really goes on. Do you want to have an "interaction" with a cop at 5 AM in the morning? I dont https://www.newsday.com/long-island/...crime-iinhqf7q
Hey that’s cool. Probably shoulda had a police presence all along.
Might’ve curtailed past crimes. I don’t know about during the day, I never felt too scared, but at night I think every station in any neighborhood at any time in history feels a little sketchy.
Not just “crime” and “criminals”, but as a teen/young adult, I’ve had some scuffles with some wanna be tough guys and such. Meh whatever. Police presence is good.
This is just a marketing campaign at a last ditch effort to get ridership back. It won’t work, mta is lying with there ridership. I passed hicksville station today at 1130am parking lot was at best 40% full.
If a large amount of people are able to continue working from home, ain’t nuthin gonna increase ridership. The volume of people just won’t be there any longer. Jumping down the rabbit hole, maybe if they ban motor vehicles or make the “congestion” taxes sky high, that might help. Ya know LIRR in bed with the politicians, conspiracy blah blah blah.
Even the shrinking pool of deniers admit crime and quality of life issues in NYC are going in a bad direction. The ratio of nuts to normals is way off. Of course there’ll be LIRR spillover. Nobody wants to be unarmed in a train car with a violent and/or crazy person. Adding cops is both a practical and a symbolic move . We’ll see if it’ll increases ridership.

Of course the MTA wants ridership back, they have been suffering the past 2 years since March 2020 and they are in a billions of dollars budget deficit, much like the rest of NYC and NY itself.
I think they are lying about the ridership numbers too.....the pandemic is pretty much over but it still seems people are not going back to the office and still working from home, which I see is going to stay that way it seems.
Every time i get stopped at the gates and I see a train passing by it's at best 30% , maybe 40% full.
i don't think it's going back to pre-pandemic levels anytime soon.
Not only that, people don't buy tickets or pay their fares anymore. I was on the train on a Saturday 2 weeks ago going into Manhattan for dinner and a show and the conductor game by to the woman sitting adjacent to me (maybe a 20 something year old african american woman) and she had her headphones on, totally ignoring the conductor. He was asking for her ticket and she never even looked at him, head out the window with headphones on. So he was probably just like "F it, and walked away".......
What are they going to do? Forcefully grab the person to get their attention or throw them off the train at the next stop?

Lmfao, you can see how crowded the trains are at a crossing in your car. Try riding it. They are 85% back to pre pandemic ridership.
Thanks Hochul! After she gets elected, cops will be vilified/defunded again and COVID restrictions will become a thing again.
Just in time for "flu" season....
