A LOT of LI'ers could afford to go without bagels and pizza.
We are in De. We have one pizza place that is acceptable for us. Great no, but acceptable. Bagels, there is only one decent bagel place. We live in the beach area and there are many NY and NJ people who moved here who agree with us. Not saying that is a fact - just a fact for us.
We believe for pizza, the problem is that where we used to go on LI used and still uses, whole milk mozzarella and here they all use skim milk. The place we go to has similar crust, most places are thicker close to Sicilian. There is a local legendary pizza place that people flock to that uses a "swirl" of sauce and we have tried several times to understand the appeal, but we just can't get there. I also think it is also about what you are use to. I have heard it said several times that when people come here (US) from Italy that they hate our spaghetti.
While, I will still stand on we miss pizza, bagels and Chinese food, we are not addicted to any of them. When I eat food, I enjoy what I eat. I would rather pass on food than eat so-so food, so we do enjoy it when we go back to LI for a visit.
I was in a FL suburb looking at real estate, and the restaurants there were far superior to the mediocre overpriced restaurants that is typical for LI (especially the crap here in the North Shore).
I have to agree. The area where my parents had retired to had a number of locally-owned restaurants of excellent quality. There was also a mix of chain places catering to tourists that have infested LI, too.

I love grotto’s pizza on the Delaware shore. Don’t judge me lol!
Love the owner hate the pizza. We live a mile from the boardwalk and marvel at the business they do.
I love it lol but I’m an unashamed fan of “cheap pizza”lol probably because that’s all we really had growing up in FL. I always hit it up when we go up there (we love Bethany beach) And you are right during summer that place is a gold mine especially the beach side ones.
