One zone heat, extra appliances, poor insulation - you'd be surprised how much this contributes to your bill. I bought a dehumidifier for my son a couple summers ago - electric bill went up $30/month. Also, steam heat stinks - gets really hot which is nice but cools off FAST. Had it for awhile in our house on LI and was never a fan.

much warmer upstairs and that is where I stay for the winter pretty much .

Check what that electric heater is pulling. Generally speaking, they pull a lot and I mean a lot of electricity. It sounds like you are using as supplemental heating and there is the problem.

My daughter uses an electric space heater in her room when it's cold since it's over the garage - surprisingly negligible impact on my electric bill.

A few dollars? My heating bill is a quarter of what it was using OIL. Do it as soon as you can. I recouped the cost of conversion in 3 years.

National grid gave me a date 3 weeks away. So I’m very close. All my equipment is decades old so it’s perfect for me to convert.

NY is phasing out fossil fueled heat sources. 2025 for new construction. 2030 for replacing existing systems. It is going to be a fortune to heat your house with electric.

I think it's great.
There's no other way really. Fossil fuels aren't sustainable. So sooner or later we need to switch.
Heating with heat pumps cost slightly more than gas, but much less than oil. And it's better for everyone.
