My husband has accepted a job in Southampton and we’re beginning to look at houses in Manorville, East Moriches & Center Moriches, as we don’t have the budget to get any closer to SH. I’m familiar with the areas as we lived in Ridge previously, but not the schools since I didn’t have school aged children at the time or grow up locally. I have a son starting kindergarten so my immediate concern is about elementary schools but don’t want to dismiss the fact that we might end up in a “forever” house. East Moriches seems to be a great district and is at the top of our list but there is so little inventory on the market that it’s unlikely we’ll find something there.
I’m hoping for some insight on both CM and ESM school districts from people that have first hand knowledge or experience. I’ve looked into the ratings and both are rated poorly but I know those ratings can be skewed by a number of factors. I know the districts are drastically different sizes so I don’t expect a direct comparison.
If you wouldn’t recommend either, are there any decent private/parochial schools in the area?
OP, have you found anything within your desire in the area? We are also looking into this area / school districts but mainly due to the acreage of lots and the density of residential area. Originally we were looking at Smithtown, Dix Hills, Port Jefferson and Setauket, they all have pretty decent ratings in terms of accessibility, safety and schools, but seems like our top budget (1.25) wouldn't get us the lot size we truly want (of course, unless we invest into the renovation on a less than stellar condition).
If your job is in Southampton you will have a brutal East bound commute [trade parade] in the AM.
Maybe try Speonk, East Quogue or Hampton Bays area to get a bit closer, but take a hard look at the school scores and demographics. East Quogue and Speonk better schools and both feed into desirable WHB HS. Be sure to factor property taxes in your housing budget. Will be much lower in Southampton Town vs Brookhaven Town though values are higher in Southampton. Taxes will be particularly modest in hamlets that only have a lower school and send to another district for high school such as Speonk-Remsenberg or East Quogue. If you settle on ESM district, try for the Southampton Town side of the district. Better beach access.
