one of my best friends did this growing up until about 7th grade. He made a LOT of money. It's one of those things where normal, reasonable, level-headed people can have it be an overall positive experience for their kid. Others, not so much.

best to find another parent who has gone through it with their children or currently does it and
A- get advice from them
B-let them tell you if is worth trying it because they might currently hate it
C-give you some contacts to try it out with as well as contacts not to do business with because some "scouting" companies will just take photos, blah blah, and then take your money.

most people won't go through all the hard work just to let you leech on easily but they should be able to direct you in the right direction so you don't waste your time.

I always went by the idea that if someone wants you for something, they should be paying you. they only "entry fee" you should be paying is a couple headshots and representation.

I have heard that whole industry is swimming with pedophiles. Why would you want anyone like that around your kid?
