So the Town of Oyster Bay is cutting down two of their trees on the right of way between the curb and my sidewalk. The tree roots had expanded to such a degree that it tore up the sidewalk and truly is a safety hazard.

A rep for the town said they’d take down the trees, but I’d be responsible for having the sidewalk repaired. We’re talking about 6-8 flags here. I know the homeowner is responsible for sidewalk maintenance, but does that really hold true if it is the town’s trees that broke up the sidewalk? I’ve been told by several neighbors to fight the town on this one, but I’m not sure if I have a legal leg to stand on. Any ideas, or recommendations for an inexpensive sidewalk repair guy? TIA.

Hahahahaha. Better open up that check book. You are going to need a permit to fix it also at your expense!

Pretty funny huh? I hope you get audited by the IRS.

BTW, they’re waving permit fees.

Was audited in 2018 and 2019 owed them $116!

It is funny, I used to live in that corrupt cesspool oyster bay. They pulled the same stunt on me and my neighbors. My neighbors all paid $800-1k, I went to Home Depot got some bags of concrete fixed it myself for $20. They threatened me but I sold the house before the levied fines against me. I got the last laugh I sold the house to a church who then filed for clergy exemption and now it pays $0 in taxes. 7 years later the 2 squares I fixed are still intact and a different color than the rest of the sidewalk. If they ever dig it up I left a piece of cardboard with cellophane over it that says suck my D on tobay.

This is the busy season for masonry guys. Will be hard to find anyone that is inexpensive and good. If you do, that guy is probably booked until October.

Try this company, FALCO CONSTRUCTION GROUP located in Westbury. He's doing a huge job for my neighbor right now and the new apron looks really good. My neighbor is pretty good at finding well priced contractors.

You’re truly a class act. Thanks for your valuable input.

What do long island governments have against trees? They are destroying 100 year old trees for no reason. They have no knowledge of the environmental impact and impact to wildlife this causes, not to mention the disgusting look of cement and tar replacing what was once beautiful tree lined surburban streets. Your sidewalk is the least of the impacts these idiots against trees are having though I understand your frustration. Probably their tree destroying buddies or sidewalk fixing teamsters need more money so they had to find some poor, unsuspecting trees to destroy so the contractors can pad their income.

We had no problem finding someone to redo the sidewalk. We got a bunch of estimates and they were all in the same ballpark. This is for a relatively small job.

I’ll probably wait until then. I was told by the town guy that the repairs needn’t be done immediately.
