Hi,
Every father's day weekend, my in-laws take us (myself, husband & 4-year old) to beautiful, relaxing Southold. We spend most of our time on the patio playing board games and then going out for delicious seafood, no complaints there. Other than wineries, and possibly taking a stroll to the carousel and the cute train, can anyone recommended other activities? I would love to rent bikes or kayaks! Maybe a waterpark since the beach water is usually ice cold. Any outdoorsy activity =D Thanks

Well you have a few little lunch stands there like North Fork foods with the canopy which is nice and the beach right there too; also if you head east about 15 minutes you have the Orient Point Ferry which goes to Conn. (Foxwoods, and Mohegan Sun Casinos). The aquarium in Riverhead on 25 would probably take about 20 minutes(west) also the dinosaur museum/walk in riverhead, tanger outlet (mall) in riverhead.Alot to do out there just avoid the south fork (hamptons) because all the high school, college kids create so much traffic and everything on the north shore is much more pleasant.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Southold

It is important to know that there are 3 "Southolds" (from smallest to largest, in order of acreage):

1. There is the Hamlet of Southold;

2. There is the "Southold, NY 11971" ZIP Code postal zone, and it includes the Hamlet of Southold and parts of another adjacent hamlet within its service area; and,

3. There is the Town of Southold, and it includes one village and 10 hamlets as well as the "Southold, NY 11971" ZIP Code postal zone and other postal zones, within its borders.

For those who may not be familiar with Southold:

Southold is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the center of the Town of Southold, in the northeast part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Southold in the Town of Southold is bordered on the north by Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Greenport West, Shelter Island Sound and Southold Bay; on the south by the Little Peconic Bay and the Great Peconic Bay; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Peconic.

The Hamlet of Southold has a different border than does the "Southold, NY 11971" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Southold, NY 11971" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Southold and a place can have other than a "Southold, NY 11971" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Southold): places that have a "Southold, NY 11971" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Southold are in the Hamlet of West Greenport; and, at the same time, there are places in the Hamlet of Southold with a "Peconic, NY 11958" mailing address.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): Excellent Long Island Geographic Resource

The Mattituck Strawberry Festival is Father's Day weekend this year. See here: Strawberry Festival & Country Fair (http://www.mattitucklionsclub.org/StrawberryFestival.html - broken link)
(I don't know why I can't get that link to appear in a normal way)

When you say waterpark, do you mean Splish Splash in Calverton? It will be about 1/2 hour drive for you from Southold.

You can go to the Aquarium in Riverhead, which is part outdoors (as is its ice-cream place and the riverfront behind it) Also, in Riverhead, you can rent kayaks and canoes and take a fantastically beautiful trip (it's the last year the iconic place will be open!)

I passed by a kayak rental place in/around Southold today, but I can't recall precisely where; maybe you can call the Chamber of Commerce to ask?

If you don't want to do the strawberry festival, people seem to enjoy strawberry picking w/children your child's age this time of year, at various local farms.

Do you mean the carousel in Greenport? A stroll and lunch, a day, in Greenport is very nice, too.

There is a kyak rental place in Route 25 in Southold, just west of town.

You might also try:

(i) Orient Beach State Park in Orient. Biking, hiking, beach.

(ii) Don't discount the wineries for things beyond wine. Lots of great live music, room for picnics and relaxation. Among others, try Osprey's Dominion. It has a big open field, with lots of kids, live music and, as an aside, wine.

(iii) Do't really know what type of activity you are looking for. There is a water park in Riverhead, Splish Splash, but that may be a bit much for a 4 year old.
