I am in the military and moving to the Gabreski Airport area on LI. Can you give me some info on a good place to live and places to avoid. I am married and have 2 kids in school. I am looking at just renting (I am not sure how long I will be stationed there) Price range will be around $2500 a month.
As you probably know, Gabreski Airport in in Westhampton -- part of the infamously expensive Hamptons -- so budget is important. Many of these towns have very good school district because their tax rolls are bloated from part-time high taxes on expensive homes of part-time residents who don't use the schools. If you could find a place in what East Enders call "North of the Highway" (i.e., further from the beach (and much less expensive), north of Montauk Highway) in Quogue, Remsenberg or Westhampton, you would be doing pretty well, but it will be tough on that budget. Also, consider looking on the North Fork, a short 20-25 minute drive, with beautiful farmland and good schools. Anywhere from Jamesport east to Southold.
the east moriches, remsenburg, speonk areas are good also nearby (a little closer) QUIOGUE (not to be confused with QUOGUE) and east quogue and hampton bays. Hampton bays might be one of your best choices.
I also remember that they had local housing for military personnel. Some were small 2 or 3 bedroom homes and also 2 family homes separated down the middle with 2 separate doors (not up and down).
There's a nice section off Stewart ave that's military homes I believe, right across from the airport. Beautiful area.
I actually worked for cablevision years ago and hooked up alot of them and the areas were very nice and quiet and close to all major roads, so easy access to N,S,E,W,shopping,food,etc...
