We'd like to go somewhere to just walk on the beach and see shops and restaurants, maybe even some live music. Would Davis Park be good? Or Ocean Beach?

Thanks! Hope you can reply soon, we're hoping to go there this afternoon!

A lot of families go to Davis Park. There is one restaurant, one bar, one hot dog/hamburger stand and one general store with a deli counter. The restaurant and bar (the Casino) often has live music. I know Ocean Beach has an actual village with a lot more stores but I don't know whether it's family friendly.

I was just at Ocean beach a few weeks ago for the first time, and it was very family friendly with lots of shops. I saw a lot of families with small children.

I hear Cherry Grove and the Pines have some interesting natural activites out for the viewing. ;o)

I know there are something like 4 nude beaches, including the 2 listed above. I would say the rest of the island would be outstanding. Of course, if you don't mind nudity, then the entire island should be ok.

I wouldnt recommend The Pines or Cherry Grove unless you want your kids to see alternative lifestyle's in motion. Ocean Beach gets my vote for the best kid friendly on F.I.

I have to disagree about Ocean Beach. Kids being kids and all, they have arcane laws there and one mistake could land you in trouble with the notorious O.B.P.D. Everytime I visit the place I feel like I am being watched...sorta like in East Hills. I usually just walk through and do not hang around. It is illegal to eat or drink anywhere outside the commercial district, playing frisbee, kite flying on the beach are illegal as well. There is no eating allowed on the beach at all. You cannot ride your bike at most times during the summer. For all we know it could be illegal to take photos! It isn't called the "LAND OF NO" for nothing!. It disturbs me how many people feel comfortable vacationing in a police state. They dont just write tickets...they can haul you off in cuffs for any of the infractions I listed.
I would choose Kismet as a better place to visit, they have a good amount of small shops by the ferry terminal, family friendly, no riff raff, a great beach, and trails nearby...minus the gestapo...

We ended up just driving out on Robert Moses Causeway. We drove by Jones beach but it was crazy crowded. On the way back we saw a small beach called Cedar Beach. Nothing fancy but we had a great time! The ocean was beautiful.
