Riverhead
You can go into Riverhead. Spend 2 hours at the Dinosaur Museum and then walk over to the aquarium. Be sure to take the riverboat tour up the Peconic. There is a hands on educational piece for the children explaining native marine life and you will get to walk onto a sandbar and explore there as well. The boats leave from the riverfront behind the aquarium. Nice way to spend the day. Beautiful way to see eastern LI.

I'm 90% sure the dinosaur museum in Riverhead closed. The Aquarium & the science center are still there.
IMO the most fun you can have with kids for FREE on LI is the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank, check the Cornell co-op extension website for events & details
There is "the petting zoo" and the long island game farm
There are often festivals on the north fork, check the newsady fun book
The Hallockville Museum often has fun things going on for kids as does the Stony Brook museum.
Get library cards, you'll be amazed at how many great activities our local libraries have for children.
There are so many great parks on LI, some that rent canoes or row boats, most have picnic areas & ball fields.
