I am a pursuing my Masters in Early Childhood Special Education and have to do my field experience in the fall. Originally, we were not expecting to move until next year so I haven't been looking into schools out on the island. However, we just closed on a house in Dix Hills and now I have to find a placement out there immediately. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I would go about finding a position and whether it would even be possible on such short notice? I would really like to get my Masters done and would hate to put it off. Thanks.

You would need to speak with school districts to get permission to work with their students. The principals are probably not there right now so you'd have to wait until they come in. Where are you getting your masters from? Don't they set you up with student teaching placement?

Oh gosh, there are tons of children getting special services thru agencies that go into the schools. My son is now in 4th grade and has gotten services since 1st grade.
Try the parochial schools ; they use the agencies.
Unfortunately the school I am attending does not help with placements in LI. I cannot tell you how hard it is to find something on such short notice. You would think that they would want a special ed student teacher especially since they wouldn't even have to pay me.
It has to be a NYS accredited program and classroom instruction so I am not sure whether private agencies would be acceptable. I am so stressed as a result of this. Ideally I would have loved to intern at the district I reside in, but I am thinking maybe I should start looking at the neighboring towns such as Wyandanch, Deer Park, Commack, and Melville. Plus, I would probably have to find daycare for my children out there as well. I don't know how people do it. Moving is so stressful!
