The Barnum Woods section of East Meadow is really nice but defintely over your $400,000 price range.
East Meadow is huge and also covers areas north of Hempstead Turnpike. There are some very nice split level homes west of Newbridge Road north of Hempstead Turnpike. I'd also try the area north of North Jerusalem Road off Bellmore Road near the elementary school (sorry, can't remember the name of it).
There are some very nice capes there and it has tons of kids.
fitdude7, you might want to consider the Hamlet of Salisbury (previously known as South Westbury) in the north-central and northeast part of the East Meadow Union Free School District (it's the part of the EMUFSD that's in the "Westbury, NY 11590" ZIP Code postal zone).
For those who may not be familiar with Salisbury:
Salisbury is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the northeast section of the Town of Hempstead, in the central part of Nassau County, where the Town of Hempstead converges with the Towns of North Hempstead and Oyster Bay.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Salisbury in the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by the Hamlet of New Cassel in the Town of North Hempstead (the Hempstead/North Hempstead town line); on the east by the Hamlet of Hicksville in the Town of Oyster Bay (the Hempstead/Oyster Bay Town line) and the Hamlet of Levittown; and, on the south and west by the Hamlet of East Meadow.
In 1990, Salisbury, previously known as South Westbury, was renamed and also combined with the part of the Hamlet of East Meadow that was in the "Westbury, NY 11590" and "Levittown, NY 11756" postal zones.
Salisbury is one of those many villages and hamlets on Long Island where none of the places in the community have the hamlet name in their mailing address: while most places in the Hamlet of Salisbury have a "Westbury, NY 11590" mailing address, a small slice in the east part of the hamlet have a "Levittown, NY 11756" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): //www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html
If your still looking in East Meadow, try to avoid Levitt homes, if you can.
Good luck!
Levitt home are very nice. Most homes have their oil tanks already removed and placed above ground. Also, many homes have no basements, not just Levitts. As long as the home is termite treated, they have great floor plans and are very expandable. Myself and two other couples that we are friends with bought Levitt homes and we love them. Just make sure that that above criteria is met.
There is a very desriable section of Salisbury with Levitt homes that goes to East Meadow schools and there are nice levitt homes on the border of East Meadow and Levittown (although that area isn't super nice).
KB have you ever done inspections of 1955 brick splits in the Hedges or Birchwood Knolls developments in Westbury? These homes are 4-levels (including) the basement. Are these considered Levitt-splits? If not, are you familiar with the builders? Thanks.

The splits in Birchwood Knolls are not Levitt and they are well constructed. Typical issues are ensuring the electrical system and heating has been upgraded. They are not well insulated but I can say that 90% of the time, even in new constructio! Splits have more exposed rim joists so they make them alittle worse than the average bear.

Thanks. I know these TONS of insulation in the attic and all new windows (except for the basement). By exposed rim joists are you referring to the roof-line over hang? Any idea who the builder was?
i just passed by the address of the home yesterday and you defintely do not want to live there. It's right next door to the East Meadow firehouse. On the flip side, the library is next door to that

I used to work in that library--the firehouse makes a lot of unnecessary noise all throughout the day. Pageantry, I guess. On the one hand you have to admire LIers for still having a volunteer fire department despite how urbanized and dense the place has become... on the other hand, with the gross overspending of money on 100% unnecessary things, like 20 oversized state-of-the-art firetrucks for a town of 40,000 that don't fit in the current firehouses (and instead of returning them or reselling, the solution is to build another firehouse!)... they kill the point of having a volunteer department in the first place. Lunacy.
