Just about everyone is if we compare ourselves to that $200K hypothetical plumber

I don't believe it is being underpaid as much as it is being overtaxed.

Due, in part, to the total compensation of police officers and school administrators.

If you calculate cost of living versus salaries, yes most Long Islanders are underpaid. You get more for your money in most places in the country. I'd be moving myself if my wife wasn't a teacher on way to a nice pension. I have to be honest.

If you don't have a cop or a teacher in your family, or a really high paying job in the private sector, you need to get off LI. The average person making $50-60K a year here is getting soaked..there are just as safe and nice places to live where you money goes much further. LI is just like any other suburb, and older and more run down than many.

Were not underpaid..its just that the dollar has lost 50% of it's value.
(See Canadian $ for reality check)

So much for those 100% gains in the Real Estate market.

It was all smoke.

It shouldnt be too much of a problem, its not like everyone spent their equity.

If you compare your salary to cost of living, in relation to other areas of the country...most on LI are underpaid. I'm in accounting..I could make 90% of my salary in a place where the cost of living is almost half. My wife, however, would have her salary cut in half in addition to NY states ridiculously lucrative pension system, so we aren't going anywhere. If I wasn't married to a teacher...bye bye.

Please remember that some of your fellow Long Islanders work in places such as Walmart (grown-ups, I mean). Many mow your lawn or clean your homes and offices. I do not know how some of them even can afford to live here.

A wonderful book that talks about these invisible people is Nickeled & Dimed in America . Very heartbreaking. You will never look at the workers of Target or Burger King in the same way again.

funny dman, I'm married to a teacher in a private school and I'm also an accountant. I keep telling her that wee should move out of state, shee keeps telling me family and she wants the public school teaching postion, a personal goal.

I could get a transfer to many of my US offices keep 100% of my salary, buy a much nicer house for half the value of mine. So instead of a 4br 3 bath colonial with a pool and a master suite, I have a 2 br 1 bath cape.
