My sister lives in Sound Beach; but the part that falls into the Miller Place SD. She doesn't seem to like it very much. Said it's not really that safe there. Just found out that this house 2 houses down is a drug house.
I had always thought that Miller Place was a lot nicer than Sound Beach. I'm surprised to hear this.

There are older and newer areas. There are many more expensive newer homes in Miller Place. I know from teachers who teach in Miller Place that the whole prescription pain killer epidemic is a major issue there..but that's in a lot of places.
For those who may not be familiar with Sound Beach
It might be helpful to have a map of the Hamlet of Sound Beach ...
For those who may not be familiar with Sound Beach:
Sound Beach is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the north-center part of the Town of Brookhaven, in the north-central part of Suffolk County.
Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Sound Beach in the Town of Brookhaven is bordered on the north by the Long Island Sound; on the east by the Hamlet of Rocky Point; on the south by the Hamlet of Rocky Point and the Hamlet of Miller Place; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Miller Place.
The Hamlet of Sound Beach has a different border than does the "Sound Beach, NY 11789" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have other than a "Sound Beach, NY 11789" mailing address and be in the Hamlet of Sound Beach): there are places in the Hamlet of Sound Beach that have a "Rocky Point, NY 11778" mailing address.
For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): //www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html
Yeah, sorry for that confusion (SB vs Mt Sinai). I didn't mean to hijack the thread there - just wanted to point out that ANY town, even towns with sterling reputations, will still have it's share of 'riff raff', if you will.
So my point to the OP was to take comments with a grain of salt. one person's experience does not speak for an entire area.
someone on another thread (sorry I forget who it was) put it best - they recommended going to the area you are looking to move to at night, during the day on weekends, stop in the local stores etc.. this will give you the best idea of what type of neighborhood you are moving into.
also to dman, no, that's not the drug house I was referring to. I guess there are more than we'd like to think!
Oh and agreed with Crookhaven - Sound Beach blvd is a busy road. Double yellow lines..
you can always check google maps - zoom in to the street - if you see those double yellows it's a good chance you want to avoid it..
The north end by the water is OK, but south of Lower Rocky Point Rd it is very busy.
