If I were to live in RVC, I would definately only want the RVC schools. Oceanside it a great district, but I would not want to be zoned for them unless I lived in Oceanside. I don't know if it would hurt your resale value, but it is to be seriously expected that some potential buyers would not consider your home based on the school district. I think it has more to do with town pride to go to school in the same town that you live.
District didn't matter to me or to any of the people I know in O'side schools who live in RVC. If one district was much better I would say it would be a consideration. The more important thing to me was that I was zoned for RVC incorporated village so I would get the "cheap" electric and town services. I have only seen resale values of the houses in my neighborhood soaring (until this year where they are holding steady). I don't think it's odd to live in a town and have another town's school....Long Island has some funky zoning.

I agree. When I was young I was zoned for a school in a different town because I was on the border. I didn't feel a part of the town I lived in at all. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Oceanside schools, but it is to be expected that some potential buyers may not want her house. I don't think it will affect resale, but it may lower the amount of people interested. LI does have some funky zoning, so when I bought my house, I made sure I was in a school district that was connected to the town I lived in. It's no reflection about either town or district, it's just a personal preferance.
Oceanside is a great school district. I agree with KB that it isn't an issue (I went to Oside schools and grew up in Oside and now own a house in RVC with O'side schools). If you're from the area, you know it's not an issue at all. I'm sure there are real estate agents who will advise otherwise....
How come you never see really good homes for sale in RVC with Oceanside schools. I read 20% of RVC goes to Oceanside Schools and South of Sunrise you see some really grand homes and over by Mill River too that are RVC with Oceanside Schools.
But I never see them for sale. Taxes are lower which is a plus. Is there a reason?

RVC doesn't allow for sale signs on lawns. There are plenty for sale and over by mill river is a very desirable area.
After a long search I am thinking on settling for a house in RVC with oceanside schools. The house needs a lot of work and I will have to put substantial amounts of money into it. Im concerned that in 5 years I'm going to have a hard time finding someone willing to buy in RVC because of the Oceanside school district. Not that there's anything wrong with Oside schools however I feel like people that buy in RVC look for RVC schools and people that buy in Oside look for Oside schools. Am I being paranoid?
So how did the house work out?
RVC with Oceanside Schools sounds like the best of both worlds. Great Name, cheap electric and water, parking at RVC train and low school taxes

Is it the school taxes that are high, or the village taxes? School taxes are high all around...but those village taxers (Lynbrook, RVC, Malverne, etc) are killers.
Since the OP wrote the post SEVEN years ago, before Hurricane Sandy, and has not yet returned, I don't think you are going to get an answer.
Why North Oceanside and houses in South Rockville Centre got zero sandy damage.
RVC town taxes at least gets you lower electric and lower water costs.
RVC school taxes are a boat load and RVC has a low Star exemption next to Oceanside. Sometype of crazy formula where each town gets a different Star Rebate. For example Oceanside is like $1,250 vs $750 in some richer towns. Does not sound like much but remember it doubles for enhanced star and is not based on size of house. So two million dollar home 20K school taxes in RVC the Star is chump change. But a Small cape in Oceanside 5k school taxes if you had enhanced star taxes are cut in half.

Good information, but you might want to discuss this on a new thread because I don't think the OP from 7 years ago is going to come back and answer your question.
