I looked on the AHIMA website, and decided to take the online medical coding program approved by the AHIMA. It will cost about $2000, but my employer will pay for it. I believe it's roughly about 9 months. Since I'm currently a respiratory therapist, I can still do that while I'm trying to get a job/intership in medical coding.
I was also debating medical transcription since I am a fast typist and have had dictaphone experience in the past, but after perusing several forums, it seems like voice recognition is taking some of the place of MTs, and that the pay is rather low. Also, the school is about 18-24 months long. Since I'm currently a respiratory therapist, I can still do that while I'm trying to get a job/intership in medical coding.
Good plan purplesky. I have been a medical transcriptionist for 15 years, and coding is definitely a more stable field to get into these days. Many places are just starting to send their coders home, and I foresee this being a trend in the near future. You are very smart to go with an AHIMA approved program as that is what almost all hospitals/offices are looking for. Hope all goes well for you!
No, actually RT is great, plenty of jobs. I do have small children though, and would like more of an 8-4 job during the week whiel they are in school. I still plan to work in respiratory every other weekend. I was looking into home care but there is a lot of on call at night and some of the areas are not too safe. I also don't want to be running around a hospital full-time 10 years from now
See, I want away from the "grind" schedule and want more flexibility in hours LOL! And I like that it's a career that I have options in (like home care or hospital etc)
I didn't know that. I only knew Andrews recently started teaching coding and since their medical transcription course is very well regarded among potential employers, assumed their coding course would be too. Good point! Part of being a successful coder is getting the right credentials from these organizations. Don't these organizations teach classes in coding themselves?

awesome, good luck to you. i am currently a coder and try to stay in the know. contact me if you have any questions!
Well I've read several comments about medical billing and here are the facts. I used to be a biller for a hospital and then for several doctors. I'm 52 now. Did that work in my late 30's. Was also a CNA. I have been a medicaid investigator for the last several years and was laid off last year. I tried to get back into billing. I Live in Suffolk County NY. No go. Either they want you to have certification nowadays or else a degree in something or other. I am now going to take an official course in order to get a certificate, it is an 11 wk. course but supposedly the school can help find you work. Also, I understand the job market for this field is becoming swamped as never before. There are plenty of openings, but again, they want that constant experience and I have been out of the game for over 10 years. Entry level you can make $28K and once you really know what you're doing the sky is the limit. My friend has 20 years in the business and makes over $70K a year. Good luck to one and all.
who is hirring at home billing/coding specialist? thanks
