From Lake Grove it took me about 10 minutes. Never really any traffic at that time (around 7am). I have not done this for about 5 years though, but I doubt anything has changed.

Although I do not do this often...todays trip from Sound Beach to the LIRR station in Ronkonkoma took 40 min (leaving SB at 725am)...taking Rt. 83 to the LIE)
I used to take the Smithtown train every once in a while, but it took longer to get there from my house and the train took longer to get into the city. It is, however, a good station for a relaxing ride on the double-deckers, which I find are much more comfortable than the regular electric trains.

I agree great for sleeping....lousy for commuting.
Those trains leave half empty every morning.
Good thing the North Shore declined to electrify.
