My husband and I just found a home that we are very interested in, located behind the landfill on Long Beach Road. We were wondering if we should be concerned about the close proximity of the landfill to the home (illness, etc.). Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I have read about some speculation over the years but I cannot think of any hard facts that connect specific illnesses to the landfill. It actullay isn't a very large one by NY standards. I cannot even recall it ever smelling badly, even while eating at Peter's Calm Bar right across the water.

I know that the water in that part of the bay is unusually warm all year round from the powerplant.

I have done a bunch of inspections around that landfill and never smelt anything during the inspection. Good luck!

I personally would never buy so close to a landfill but many people do, it's a personal choice.

A college classmate's parents lived in a townhome sort of across the main drag from the dump. Most of the year it was a non-issue. There were a few really hot summer days when it was a bit funky; not so bad that you would feel physically nauseated, but a lingering odor that can be attributed solely to rotting trash.

This was in the mid 80's so my experience is very old, but still 'fresh' in my olfactory sense.

During the early to mid 80s, there was a definite smell, especially in the summer. The landfill hasn't been active in years or smelled in ages.

Totally agree... The landfill really doesn't smell or pose any major health risks at all... My parents own a home in the condo's over there and we never smell anything... Thank GOD!!!

Today, Oceanside Landfill Gas Recovery is in compliance with EPA and DEC. This wasn't always the case. In 2002, three engines were shutdown, because their emissions for nitrogen oxides (NOx) were above the regulatory limit for the year.

It should be noted that they operate 7 days a week and 24 hours a day. When waste decomposes it produces gases that is then used for the purpose of energy recovery. Unfortunately, this produces combustion. Emissions from this facility include (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, VOCs, sulfur dioxide, PM10 and PM2.5).

They are required to monitor these emissions and produce annual reports. I believe these reports should be available by FOIL.
