In light of the tragedy at the Valley Stream Wal Mart on Friday, lawmakers are drafting legislation about these so-called "door buster" sales....

Hopefully, they will make laws that will prevent another tragedy like this.

they're going to find a way around it. I doubt the legi's will be able to pass something that dictates when a store can open, what it can sell and for how much. I know its a tragedy but that smacks of socialism. But maybe thats what people want. I say they should legislate some sturdier door hinges.

I don't think they're going to try and dictate prices, hours of operation, or what can be sold. I think this legislation is going to be more about "crowd control", advertising, etc.....

Ok so how would they do that? Tell you what you can advertise? how are you going to regulate this issue without going too far? Only a certain amount of people are allowed to show up? I think the best way is to set the amount of security staff by crowd population. for every 50 people yo have two guards and so on. Just using those numbers as an example.

No, not to tell them WHAT they can advertise, but HOW they must advertise. For example, the stores know well in advance that they will only be getting "X" amount of a particular sale item for that day. Those words would have to be CRYSTAL CLEAR in the advertising so you don't have 2000 people showing up to buy 25 TVs.

As far as "crowd control".... very easily taken care of. Once the first 25 people show up for the 25 TVs, the store hands out vouchers/wristbands (see my other post on this) and the other people MUST leave the property until the store is opened at 5am (or whatever time). It is private property and they can be made to leave. Of course, the retailers will also have to provide increased security on the "door buster" days ----- and not just one or two 'security guards'.

many stores, best buy in particular, already do that... they hand out tickets for the limited big-ticket sale items (tv's, computers, etc), so that there is no fighting over them in the store. if you have the ticket for the $499 tv, you get to buy it. if u dont have the ticket, u dont..

Interesting. I wonder how many of those limited-quantity voucher tickets end up being auctioned off on eBay.

IMO a fairer method would be to use those nonremoveable concert-type wristbands. Of course, I suppose there would then need to be crowd-control measures on the first day that the Black-Friday WRISTBANDS went on sale...

That would work fine for individual items. but I feel the whole premise behind the "doorbuster" is that everything in the store is on sale. How many bracelets are you going to hand out? And the idea that advertizing only a certain number of things has the drawback of "OH my god they only have five of them"!!!! and I think it'll be even more frenzied than before. Just an opinion. This is also an isolated incident. No one else from around the country had this happen. Before we start legislating let's see how prevalent this behavior is.

As a fairly liberal minded person, I find myself thinking "personal responsibilty"..........not greater regulation on stores..........although the band idea is good and I think they certainly should consider this idea (but not regulate it). However, insane people trampled the poor woman. Insane, out of control, mob minded people. I think there are already some regulations on the books about that one.

How about a little common sense? I know it's shocking that we have gotten to a point where we're too stupid to enter a store properly without killing someone, but I'd like to think that in light of this horrible tragedy most folks will show a little restraint in the future. I really don't think there need to be laws that tell people the right way to walk through a door and wait in line, seems like a big waste of time and a big photo op for whatever politician is supporting it.
