There was an airspace redesign on 2007, a macro redesign affecting air-traffic from PHL to BDL. There are a few "Nextgen" procedures at JFK (PARCH arrival over New England) but NONE of the flight paths or altitudes over Long Island for JFK were touched. Same procedures since as far back as one can remember, maybe going back to 1980. All of the folks on here railing against Nextgen as the root of all evil are unfortunately a bit uninformed.
If there was a change it was the tremendous surge of air-traffic volume. Some new technology has allowed spacing requirements to be reduced to handle that surge. New York is in the midst of a renaissance, people really want to fly to JFK. Perhaps a really big crime wave (Brian Watkins US Open) or an economic collapse could be the antidote to your air-traffic concerns.

Arrival overflow during peak arrival times - especially arrival from Europe
22L has always been used for this purpose going back as far as I can remember, yes my statements are always true just like the eternal truth.
What has changed is the surge in traffic. 83% more aircraft arrivals over the last 15 years. Where are you going to put 83% more arrivals? They have to land somewhere. Traffic may have dropped in palookaville but it is surging at JFK. The official stats were posted the other day. While there has always been a peak arrival time at JFK, it is now longer and stronger. Since 22L is the overflow arrival runway it often will be activated even when 13L or 31R is the primary arrival runway during peak hours.

This board isn't the place to 'round up the villagers' to storm the castle. There's only a handful of folks on this board (it's hard to find) like you, night, jackie, dotheright, msfit etc...Get in with the folks at planesense4LI and elsewhere. There are hundreds there who live this nightmare and/or want to help fight, here and around the country.
I'm adding more people to the list, those that are fighting for this cause (why? because at one point we HAVE TO organize a good-old protest):

I read somewhere (without linking out because that's how I roll), that air traffic to JFK had peaked years ago. And that air travel is actually on the decline!
The so call "Arc of Doom" is done for one very logical reason. To prevent the collision of a fully loaded long-haul jetliner from crashing into a Southwest airlines 737 on approach to ISP. There are two elements to the flight path:
1. Traffic arriving from Europe or points northeast is vectored 4.5 miles south ISP for separation reasons (keep clear of ISP traffic or avoid death crash) - part of the PARCH or ROBBR arrival.
2. Traffic is then vectored North to capture the 22 ILS glideslope, the initial approach fix is at 1800'
Air traffic is surging into JFK. Traffic to Pallokaville? Flat or declining.

The excuse of airplanes flying so low due to excessive trafic above going to other airports is bull.
I just went to flightradar for the first time.
The only airplanes I saw flying over long island other than JFK were going to europe.
Can anyone explain to me why an airplane going to Glasgow from Cancun HAS TO go over long island?
Another: Philadelphia to London flying right over JFK! WTF??
