Can someone please educate me as to why Long Island is not listed in this forum, as a whole area? When I try to find the median income, education, etc., I could not find Long Island as a whole, but found Kiryas Joel, New York, another entity that I did not know existed as a town/city in the State of New York. This is a surprise to me!

I came across a forum in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill/Cary section called " LI Transplants-want to move back," on page 5, of 11/30/08, whereas Long Island is taken in its totality and is being bashed, and I wanted to reply to them, with more facts and research, because I know Long Island is beautiful, and I do not like the way it is being depicted.

And all of this because of the WalMart incident.

Thank you,

It's because Long Island "as a whole" is not an entity, other than as a simple geographical feature. It's not a county, nor a state, nor a city, nor a single township or town or village or community or any other legal entity unto itself.

And of course to confuse things even further for people outside our area, even though Brooklyn and Queens are part of Long Island As A Geographic Feature ..... when "Long Island" is mentioned, it's only Nassau and Suffolk counties that are meant!

So if CityData were to give stats for Long Island as a whole, they'd have to include Kings and Queens County in order to be geographically correct. And that would result in incorrect or misleading information for people who were looking for statistics applying only to Nassau and Suffolk counties.

First, Kiryas Joel is not a town/city; Kiryas Joel is a village in the Town of Monroe in Orange County.

Second, //www.city-data.com/forum/new-y...-glossary.html will help you understand New York State geography and, third, //www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html will help you understand the geography of "Lawn Guyland".
