It's not a write-off but you can get an energy tax credit as per IRS schedule. Oh, and the available tax credit for energy conservation is better in 2009 than it was in 2008

Also, when the time comes to sell the house, you can add the cost minus the credit to your basis...

Thanks everyone! Looking forward to getting those names. I think it will be well worth the expense. As for the holes in the exterior, it was my understanding that those get plugged up and recovered by the siding, no?

Absolutely. And if Im correct its only like a 4" diam. hole. And if I remember correctly I think they do the outside b/c most of these old homes with no insulation have plaster interior walls.

Ok. Well tell us what you paid then since you know the number? Did you do the attic? Did you insulate under the crawlspace basement? Which type of insulation did you use? Did you get a themal image of your home when it was completed to see the new heat loss areas?

Someone recently told my DH that they spent $2k for their house which is a little bigger than ours. I'm estimating theirs to be roughly 1200 sf. He didn't ask whether that included the attic. He also didn't get the company name yet but if I find out I will post it here.
