We're thinking about relocating to Shoreham from Centereach. Currently, we have every type of store you can imagine just minutes away. I don't go out east (at all) and from google maps, it seems that there are no shops conveniently located for the E. Shoreham/Wading River area.

So, where do you all shop for everyday stuff (such as Stop And Shop, Walmart, Target). From the maps, it looks like you have to hike it for 5-10 miles.

We would be moving mainly for the better school district and to be with people who are more like us (college educated). We're wondering if it's worth it to move out there (or just keep the kids in private). If someone can tell me what life is like out there, I would sure appreciate it

I'm not quite in Shoreham, but am in Rocky Point. You are correct in your assessment that you have to get in a car and drive to shopping. There's a King Kullen in Wading River, a Waldbaums in Rocky Point and a Stop & Shop in Miller Place. I pick the one with the best sale that week, as I'm not driving to all three to price shop. As for Target, you have to go to either Medford or East Setauket or Riverhead. There is a Kohls in Rocky Point, and I've been known to wander there when I HAVE to go to a store for some quick retail therapy. When I want to do a bit of shopping however, I either go to East Setauket for Stop & Shop, BJ's, Target, Home Depot and such. Or Riverhead, for the same things plus quite a few other stores. You end up planning your shopping a bit more - which can be good for the budget - and combining your trips and stocking up instead of shopping every few days.

Other than that its a nice area, as you don't have too much of the shopping traffic - except during pumpkin picking season. And there are some nice restaurants to go out to eat - Phils, Gracies, etc. It's a family community and most of my neighbors are young families with children. I'm the odd one out here as I'm single without kids.

SWR is a GREAT move, you'll love the area there's nothing thats more than 5-10 min away (and you'll have way less traffic).

SWR is much nicer than Centereach in every way imaginable.

Good luck

Centereach has it's good points and bad (for us).
We are a very academic family, and education is very important to us. My children were in the district for a while, but we had some major problems so we took them out. They're in private which we estimate will cost us $89k from this point until they graduate. So, we're looking into moving.
Don't get me wrong, many families here like the school district, but we have very high standards that just weren't met.

We're also outgrowing our house.

When you say East Setauket (for Target, Home Depot, etc.), do you really mean South setauket, off Pond Path?

Possibly. It's the corner with 347.

Not for nothing but were in Rocky Point and we head out to RT 58 in Riverhead for stuff all the time. Its like a 15-20 min ride.

Its WAY faster than 347 SHaven Mall area and they have everything.

BTW Wal Mart Middle Island is a stones throw from Shoreham too... but they are in league with Satan.
