The only way to stop it is for judge's to stop being wussy about it and lock these CRIMINALS up. Here's my proposal (so long as no one is killed or injured. In that event, then it's prison time/no plea bargaining):

First DWI? Suspended license for 6 months, $1500 fine, community service at an ER on Friday, Saturday, Holiday nights, alcohol program, drug/alcohol testing 3x/week. If you can't pay the fine, you do 150 days in jail and still have to fulfill the remaining obligations once you're released.

Second DWI? Suspended license for 2 years (after the jail time), 1 year in jail (no early out), community service upon release, $2500 fine, drug/alcohol testing, 5 years probation.

Third DWI? Revoked license, 5 years in prison, $5000 fine.

Any further DWIs, 15 years in prison.
Agree with that. I think sentence for a 2nd DWI should be even harsher

Shot down because their "enablers" ... the idiots who pamper them and put the cars and insurance in their own names and let the DWI creep drive with no legal responsibility for paying for the car or its insurance ... complained they would lose "their cars." Well, how about not letting the person with the DWI drive "your car?" There are too many spineless people out there enabling drunks and addicts to get behind the wheel. When a tragedy happens they too should be held responsible for contributing to vehicular manslaughter. Go cry at the Al-Anon meeting about it. If you let the drunk drive "your car" you are responsible too.

Unless they introduce (long) mandatory sentences for repeat offenders, I really don't think there's a solution to this.

you can make them pay fines, take their cars, and anything else you can think of...but unless they're incarcerated, repeat drunk drivers are going to continue to drive drunk.

The problem is that people see driving as a right and not as a privilege. As long as people feel entitled to drive, they will drive whether or not they legally have a right to do so.

The penalties need to become stiffer, right now it's just a slap on the wrist. Also there shouldn't be a conditional license for a DWI offense - mandatory suspension of their license. Let 'em walk, bike (pedal) or take a bus to work. Their right to drive to work ended when they got behind the wheel drunk and put others in danger.

Crooks you won't be able to do that. It will probably violate their civil rights somehow. Some ACLU quack will take it to court and win. I think it should be this way will most crimes.

You like to mess with kids? Put it on the plates.

You don't pay your taxes? Put it on the plates. or a sign around your neck.

It'll never happen. Sadly.

The reason most of the drunkards are still on the road after DWIs is precisely because they do not have the cars they drive IN THEIR NAMES ... somebody else pays the freight and lets them drive, so there would be precious few plates emblazoned with the scarlet letter of "DWI" anyway.

It has never happened in NY that I know of, but sometimes judges DO sentence people to stand where their crime took place and display a sign around their neck telling what their crime was. For example, a person was sentenced to stand in front of a store with a sign that said, "I shoplifted here!" It wouldn't be such a stretch to have DWI'ers stand on a street corner where an accident they caused took place with a sign that says, "I was driving drunk and caused an accident here."

ALL FOR IT!!!!! but sadly it'll never happen in NY. We'd be worried that it might embarass them cause some kind of psychological damage or something. Then they'll claim they can't work and collect.
