I am looking to put up a retaining wall on the front side and front of the house to level off the property. Its about 15 – 20 feet of wall made of railroad ties ranging from 2 to 4 feet height of wall. I did get a quote for $6K and thought that was a bit steep. Can someone recommend a contractor and what type of price would be reasonable for this type of job?

If your footage is accurate, that sounds steep. Some contractors charge by square footage and some per tie. Aside from the area of height by width, a course also needs to be below grade and also a four foot tieback with a two foot deadman between all ties from the second above grade to the second from the top course are hidden labor and material. There is also site preparation to be considered as well as site access.
