FWIW, I wouldn't trust what Newsday reports on New Cassel or VS either. (And I don't think either of those areas is the south Bronx circa 1987.) It's really declined as a paper.

Thats odd, I always understood that angels harps play and a shore town utopia unfolds the moment you cross into Smithtown.

Looks like there was a major fire or building collapse on the south side of Rt.25 just east of the LIRR station. The LIRR station itself is a dive, plus that building in the back.

I hate waiting for the train there, Ronkonkoma is a much nicer station, better service and a waiting room that's actually open most of the time.

OMG that pic says it all right there! Graffiti on an abandoned warehouse can only mean one thing....MS-13 world headquarters is located in a secret underground lair within. Smithtown is DONE, 100% violent ghetto. Get out quick.....

What place can we trash next?

Wow....I grew up there. Haven't been back in at least 10 years. My, my, how the times have changed.
When I was a kid you didn't hear about any *real* crime there. Then again, we didn't have 24 hour news, cable/ internet and cell phones to report every little thing. Smithtown sounds like Ft. Lauderdale, now....except here in S. FL the taxes are way lower.

I am biased as a current resident...but based on the multi-generational families in the Town and my experience (past five years), not much has changed. Although the graffiti artists seemed more talented these days ...

I even went clam digging last week...

All hyperbole aside, there is a growing issue in many "upper" middle class parts of Long Island with Heroin. You start with kids taking prescription painkillers like Oxycotin and Hydrocodone, basically opiate mixed with tylenol, and the next progression is straight opiate abuse as the addicts tolerance builds and the negative side effects of tylenol (liver damage) start to manifest. Something very similar was chronicled in a report I saw about Brockton MA. Doctors are prescribing this stuff like it's candy, and it's making it's way into every high school on LI. I've heard similar concerns regarding Hauppauge HS, Smithtown, HHH, etc.

I went to the Dr. a few months ago with minor back pain, and he wrote a prescription for hydrocodone without even telling me what it was....I already know. I never filled it, but a lot of people have bottles of this stuff lying around their medicine cabinets. Throw this stuff OUT if you don't need it.

Bad things happen in every town. Newspaper cant cover it all so they do it in sections.. like police setting up seat belt and Tint check points.
I know the Dolans...nice people.

I just went back and read this entire thread...LOL.

If the OP wants to stay away from this horribly eroding Township of criminal infested areas like Kings Park, Commack, Smithtown, Nesconset and St. James that is fine with the area residents. All of those good schools, community activities and resident only parks and town beaches are overrun with Latin Kings and Heroin kingpins anyways. They were giving out wine to under age kids at St. Patrick's the other day - broad daylight, and right on main street...unreal. I might have to pack some heat for my next weekend bike ride through main street St. James and along the Nissequogue River and Old Dock Road. A stray Bichon Frise' barked at me from behind a picket fence the other day...

No area is perfect of course. Of course Smithtown has crime. And as Crookhaven often mentions if you want to avoid Smithtown because of the crazy taxes in some areas, I could not agree more. That is one thing I miss from Brookhaven as the taxes can be oppressive for some.

Heroin is a growing problem in all high schools as it is cheap and obviously incredibly addictive. Having 1000 parents show up might also mean it is a community of very concerned and involved families. Smithtown is certainly not immune to any of these things, and it appears that it is a growing issue in the schools. Having lost family members to this drug I feel for anyone struggling with such an addiction. Oxycotin and other over the counter meds has really sparked this issue nationally.
