Someone give the the low down... I am average to lower income, but I have found a house that I am interested in located in the South Country School District. Compared to others, thumbs up or down? Any specifics would be great. I was seriously looking into patchogue/medford school districts, which i find to be ok, not great, not bad either... I know South Country is an upgrade, any ideas how much of an upgrade.

My only true point of refference is the Bay Shore School District, that I graduated from in 1995.

Thanks in advance,

I would think Patchogue-Medford is a better district than South Country.

Honestly, I think the bad performance of South Country is due to a certain group of people that just can't be taught with the conditions they live in. When you add them to a group of reasonably adjusted middle-class students, of course the district will look bad.

Also, whose budget keeps getting shot down year after year? Not South Country.

The really rough & violent element of North Bellport attends South Country. They have had the high school on lockdown because of racial tensions. North bellport is one of the most crime ridden areas of Suffolk, I know a few people that work in the ER of Brookhaven hospital which is right there. The stories they tell about what stumbles in the ER on Saturday nights right from the neighborhood is scary. Sounds more like Kings County Hospital on a Saturday night.
That would be my only concern.
I think there are other towns with lower crime & average to low average schools with similar home prices.

I had a relative who went to school in Bellport in the 70's and 80's and he was jumped on 2 separate occasions by black students, once being sent to the hospital. Granted, he had a bit of a big mouth, but that shouldn't land you in the hospital. I'd avoid the district because of the underlying race issues.

Bellport Village is affluent.
Its really a tale of two towns.

Id still give the edge to SoCo over Pat Med.

When I describe the mix of the entirety of Bellport, I usually call it a "reverse Oreo" if you know what I mean...avoid the chocolate filling.

From what I hear, if your child needs any kind of special ed, it is very very hard to get thru South Country.

Quite a few people I know personally live in that district but send their children to parochial/private school after attending the Sound Country for a year or so.

Pat/Med I think is better.
