My husband and I live in western Nassau and would like to move to North Shore. We are looking at Glen Head or Northport. Regarding schooldistricts, community feel, and value which is better choice?

We looked at the Glen Head/Sea Cliff area because we heard good things about the schools and because we work in Nassau and Queens. We ended up in Northport because it also had good schools and we could afford a house on a larger lot than we could in Nassau(we're on 1/3 of an acre). Taxes are reasonable, by LI standards. And it really is such a pretty area. I love being near the sound - we go to the beaches a lot, even in the off-season. Even during the week in the summer, you'll find people there in the evening watching the sunset, fishing, hanging out with their families - it's my favorite time of day there. The only negative is distance to the city, which impacts my husband more than me since he has to go into Manhattan most days. When I go in on my own or with my son, we usually take the LIRR - a long ride, but preferable to driving.
Good luck with your decision - we bought a year ago and prices are down since then, so you should do well :-)
Where are you working? Northport's pretty, but it's a tough commute if you work in NYC. (My sister was ready to kill herself after doing it for a year.) That would be my only real concern about living there.

It is a long commute. Most people who live in Northport drive to the LIRR station in Huntington (10-15 minutes), rather then using the Northport station. The electric trains end at Huntington, so to use the Northport station you need to change eithe at Huntington or Jamaica.
That's what she did. But the drive, plus her subway commute at the other end, added up to nearly 1h45 each way.
