I left NY about 15 years ago - was living in Manhattan. By then everyone I knew was using the word Asian(Oriental was only for rugs) to refer to people from China, Japan, Korea, etc.
I've been living in MA the last several years - again, everyone says "Asian".
FF to 2 years ago and I'm back in NY, on Long Island now, and I keep hearing people use the word Oriental! Even my Chinese friend at work uses the term. I was always taught it was offensive.
Does anyone have insight? Do you hear people use this word?
I really haven't heard it all that much lately. Most people seem to use "Asian". I wasn't aware it was considered offensive...then again I only learned "mulatto" was considered offensive a few years ago so maybe I'm just a little bit behind the times on this sort of thing.
When I lived on Long Island I used the term oriental and I never knew that it could be offensive. Now that I live in Manhattan I've become used to using the term asian instead.
I live in a fairly diverse area (by LI standards) and people I've heard use Asian. There is an Oriental Grocery store, but that's the only time I have seen/heard it used.
The only people I have heard use Oriental are like my grandparents and people from their age group .... I assume Sean's dad fit's into that group as well.
