Unfortunately whaling is still practiced in other parts of the world, such as near the South Pole. Watch the show Whale Wars and see how the whalers are using the guise of "research" to hunt whales. The Sea Sheapard's tactics may be like pirates, but no one else is policing those waters.
Thankfully our offshore waters dont have whaling, and magnificent creatures like the Blue Whale can thrive here.

Might not be whaling off our east coast, but a short drive up north to Canada and you can club to death all the furry little seals you want under the guise of curbing overpopulation.
