I'm moving to LI from OR next month and need to find an apartment without visiting. My office is in Garden city and I'm looking for 1 bed apartment within about 15 minutes from the office. Which area is cheap and safe? Rents seem very expensive to me compared to OR and I feel I can pay $1200/mo, but can consider up to $1400.
Also, is there any good web site to look for an apartment (I already know craiglist)? Do I need to use a broker?
Yes, of course I remember my earlier thread and I appreciate all comments. I was thinking to live without a car before I posted, but I understood that I would need a car after I read everyone's comments and broaden the areas where I'd like to live. So I'd like to have comments/recommendations for this new thread.
Do you want to be in an apartment building, garden apartment or in a private home? Legal or illegal apartment?(basement apartments are mostly illegal, as are probably most of the apartments you'll find advertised on Craig's list?
Mineola has all of the above. Safe, 5 minutes from work, Long Island Rail Road station to go to Penn Station in NYC, good access to Meadowbrook parkway to drive down to Jones Beach.
Long Island is not cheap. Even "bad" areas have relatively high rent.
Thanks for your email, fopt65! I don't mind a type of an apartment and any of an apartment building, garden apartment or in a private home is fine. But I don't want illegal one not only because it is illegal, but because I'd like a sunny room. Mineola sounds nice. An issue is that how can I find an apartment in Mineola without visiting? Is there any good website to search? Do I need to use an broker?
Mineola is a good choice (I'm biased ) and will fit the price range you are looking for in a 1br. Craigslist is a good source (google or yahoo map every listing if possible).
