"In Patchogue!" was kind of meant to be sarcastic (sorry if it didn't come across). Obviously, I know that people of all religions live in Patchogue. Being a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, I chose Patchogue (in part) for its diversity. However, whenever I talk about Patchogue and diversity, people tend to automatically assume that "diversity" is code for Latinos.

I live near the one on Mowbray, except for the longest time I had no idea it was there (there wasn't a sign on the main road). It is in an unassuming little house near the corner of Roe and Waverly. Every Saturday I would see families walking toward the intersection, then I'd glance down to fiddle with the radio, and then "Poof!" -- they were gone. Into the 7-Eleven? No. The "antique" store? No...just gone. Like the X-files. Years later, they put a menorah on the lawn in December and I caught a clue.

The Young Israel of Patchogue (http://www.ou.org/network/shuls/yipatch.html - broken link) is an Orthodox shul.

When you see these folks walking to or from the shul or simply going for a Shabbat walk on Saturday afternoon, give them a "Good Shabbat" and you'll get friendly smiles back in return.

A map of the Hamlet of Stony Brook, Town of Brookhaven:
We see a fair number of young Orthodox people and families walking along 25A and Cedar St on the Sabbath . The neighborhoods around SUNY are very convenient for them to walk to campus where services are held.

Given the diverse population in the area, the Orthodox community should fit in well.

On a side note: My HS classmate attended SUSB and later went on to become an Orthodox Rabbi. We're very proud of him -- even us goyim!

Amoret68, Patchogue has ALWAYS had a big Jewish community. I live right where you are talking about and I would say half of our neighborhood if not more, are Orthodox Jews.
