it's a lot more fun than some other places...I mean no offense to anyone, but I can't imagine some rural town in bumblef*ck Iowa being all that fun.

Actually living in a rural area opens up a lot of opportunities for imaginative play that living in the suburbs doesn't.

When we were kids our parnets gave us the option, stay home and do chores or get out of the house and do what we wanted. Wasn't really a tough choice. Played ball until the sun went down, rode our bikes EVERYWHERE! And I mean everywhere never had a problem and judging by some of the threads here it wasn't in the best neighborhood.

I agree with those that say it's much more a cultural/generational change than a regional change.

Also agree with the poster who said that in rural areas childhood is MORE like what I experienced when growing up in the 1950s/60s but still not the same because let's face it, we had no computers, video games, cable/satellite tv, or any of the modern "toys" that don't depend at all on one's location.

And thoroughly agree with the poster who said that living in a rural or even semi-rural area would be pure torture!

Crooks,
Not meaning to be a PIA here but how could you even think of such activities in today's society? Thank goodness we are so much more educated today than years ago, or should I say thank goodness we are all so deluded with our own self importance.

Hiking/Clam digging/dirt bike riding/ body surfing/bonfires/camping: Clearly these activities do nothing but destroy the environment. Starting fires which could terrorize insects, stamping on defenseless dirt, & the risk of stressing various forms of marine life. Does Greenpeace know about this? Outside of this, there is a huge potential personal annoyance factor. What if I want to swim where you're clamming, what if I want to hike where you're riding or ride where you're walking...me...me...me, or I'll complain to the fed, state, county, town, village, hamlet or whatever municipal authority that I can!

Skateboarding/Roller skating/skitching: 2 big issues here -
First, way too much noise pollution. Kids laughing and screaming? NIMBY...I have rights you know...no one should make noise near me...unless I want to engage in the activities!

Second, the potential liability of these kind of activities is just sky high...wait...I mean I'll claim damages and sue ya!

Things such as riding 4 wheelers and dirt bikes, fishing, lake swimming, hunting, boating, hiking, etc. People there have plenty of fun activities to do. Just b/c you cant do those things on LI doesnt mean they are not enjoyed by others elsewhere.
