I will probably be going to Montauk on Monday for a picture. What is it like? Needless to say I have never been there

Its great out there. You have the Montauk Lighthouse. A nice walk is taken by going from the parking lot and go down a dirt path that is to the right of the lighthouse. It opens up onto a beach. Around the bend to your left are large boulders. You can walk on them and go around the lighthouse (basically you're between the water and lighthouse) and it comes out near the old snack bar. At worst you'll get a little wet from the waves crashing against the rocks but its safe and myself and many others have walked those rocks many times. You can also take a tour of the lighthouse and museum, not sure how much it costs though.

Also just before the lighthouse is Camp Hero. It was a military base and decomissioned in the '80's. They made it into a park. You can wander around there and see the old military buildings which were built to resemble an old settlement (this was done to "hide" the actual base). You can also see the old buildings which housed the large guns.

You also have Oyster Pond you can hike to as well as Big Reed and Little Reed ponds.

Bring a camera, bring walking shoes, bring some water and enjoy the day.

I forgot to add there is also a great view on the other side of the old snack bar. The old snack bar is located just across the street from the entrance to the parking lot. Go through the doors or around the building. There used to be a sign there that would point out various shipwrecks.

Default For those who may not be familiar with Montauk

For those who may not be familiar with Montauk:

Montauk is a hamlet (an unincorporated area) in the extreme east part of the Town of East Hampton, on the eastern end of the South Fork in the extreme southeast part of Suffolk County.

Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Hamlet of Montauk is bordered on the north and east by Long Island Sound; on the south by the Atlantic Ocean; and, on the west by the Hamlet of Napeague.

The Hamlet of Montauk has a different border than does the "Montauk, NY 11954" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Montauk, NY 11954" mailing address and not be in the Hamlet of Montauk): places that have a "Montauk, NY 11954" mailing address that are not in the Hamlet of Montauk are in the Hamlet of Napeague.

For a good set of town-by-town maps showing all the villages and hamlets in each of LI's 13 towns (3 in Nassau County and 10 in Suffolk County): //www.city-data.com/forum/long-...-resource.html

Take a ride down West Lake Drive (left turn off Montauk Hwy when coming from the west) to Gosman's Dock. Be there when the fishing boats come in.
