I just saw a flyer for Western Beef. The prices looked really good - most things are sold in bulk or family size. It seems to cater to a Latin clientele - alot of the products also had the Spanish name printed next to it. I remember driving buy the one in Mineola - The building is painted orange on the outside. I am going to smoke some pork shoulders this weekend for pulled pork on Father's day - I will check the place out and report back.

I went in there once and the smell was atrocious. It was the dirtiest supermarket I have ever been in (bugs everywhere). Perhaps it is just the one location I went to, but I refused to ever go into a Western Beef after that experience.

You went to the Mineola location?

Western Beef is a perfectly fine operation. They've been around for years and primarily specialize in inner city locations so they are very adept at knowing the ethnic specialties, and desires, that much of their client base looks for. They frequently have some very good priced general grocery items as well.

Many of their locations have a very warehouse type feel to them. This sometimes can leave the stores with a not very appealing look. I have not seen extreme unsanitary conditions in any of their stores like llama8 has indicated. I have seen conditions that are not up to par, but these can be seen at just about every chain from time to time. Doesn't mean that llama8 is wrong, just that I have not personally seen conditions that extreme.

The interesting thing about the Western Beef in the Mineola location is that while it has been mentioned that the clientele catered to is primarily Latin, Mineola has a large Italian and Portuguese population in and around the area as well. I would assume a lot of the ethnically unique items are very diverse. My mother in law has been in there and she liked the store. Good prices on beef.

I go to the one in Elmost sometimes if they are having a sale on something I want to stock up on. Whenever I've been there the store has been clean and was not smelly, but like someone said, it has a warehouse type feel to it, particularly the meat and dairy department which is like walking into a big meat refrigerator! They have Boars' Head deli meats at good prices, produce at excellent prices, and meat (in large packages mostly) at excellent prices. They also have dedicated baggers at every register! (When was the last time you saw that on LI?)

PS: For those of you who remember "Gouz rhymes with cows!" they used to be Gouz! (sp of Gouz?)

I shop at Western Beef in Elmont when we are barbecuing for a large group. The only meat I haven't liked was the burgers. What I like most is the selection of fruits and vegetables. They are from every culture and I often see something new to try-especially the fruit. Not the most appealing environment but clean, well stocked and relatively inexpensive.

Default C-Town is the Worst!

C-Town is worse. Like the C-Town in Westbury for instance. Smells terrible, dirty, and they pretty much cater to those who buy Goya products (they actually have removed most of the other ethnic products, including the foods my Italian neighbor used to get, in favor of more Goya). So diverse it aint. C-Town recently closed for a "remodeling" but sadly not much has changed.
It would be so nice if they tore down C-Town and put up something like the North Shore Farms in Glen Cove (corner of Glen Cove Ave and Sea Cliff Ave).
Used to be a real dive building with a Super Save Mart, but was knocked down and rebuilt and its beautiful.
Why hasn't Westbury Village taken this opportunity to clean up Post Ave?

What does this have to do with Western Beef? Nothing in this thread about C-town, Post Ave., or Westbury.
