They def would be cheaper. When fuel goes up, so do the rates. I realize they would not be giving EL away, but it would atleast be half.
Supposedly changing from a private for-profit company (LILCO) to a public not-for-profit company (LIPA) was going to cut our rates significantly. We all know the result of that. We still have the highest electric rates in the country (if not, we're still at least in the top 10). I don't trust them. They'd think up a way to fix the books so that it would look like Shoreham was operating at a loss.
They should finish building it. We need nuke power. If they want, they can build one in my yard.
I agree. If Shoreham (along with Jamesport) had been built, we'd have been able to shut down alot of the dirty oil burning plants at Northport and Port Jeff. The environmentalists claimed "victory" but they actually hurt the environment because of all the extra greenhouse gases and soot being dumped over LI by these oil burning plants. Not to mention oil is more expensive and helps make our "friends" in the Middle East rich.
Its a lose-lose for everyone. Everyone was so worried about an accident, that was pretty much impossible given Shoreham's design with an impenetrable containment vessel.
Oil isn't exactly safe. Its stored in flimsy containers that are easy targets. Just go to Youtube and see all the oil storage explosions.
The only serious nuclear accident in the world was Chernobyl. It had no concrete containment vessel and was extremely poorly designed. Such a plant would never have been built in the US. Three Mile Island was blown out of proportion and used by anti-nuclear fear mongerers. Its a shame, we could've decreaded reliance on Middle Eastern Oil and helped halt climate change, but as always, fear and greed set in and win.

A meltdown would not affect the outside environment and be contained in the superstructure. And chances of a meltdown are slim to none with numerous safety devices.

Well put. Someone who actually sees through all the bullsh&t. Enviromentalists??? Most of them were probably stock holders in oil companies.
Im aware of the slim to none chances of a meltdown or accident. I was using the CT. plant as an example on how close it was to Shoreham anyways. The US Navy has been using nuclear submarines for over 50 years without incident.

Well said. What's more, they've even tried the environmentally "better" (read: acceptable to anti-nuclear wingnuts) route via windfarms and those were shut down. They're now trying to build an LP gas staging facility 16 miles of of Long Beach and people are complaining that it might spoil the view or be a terrorist target. You know, because you can see something 16 miles away, and if it blew up, you'd feel a little breeze. Meanwhile we pay the highest (or second highest, I forget) rates in the country.

Enviros cry about so many things and the majority of issues are made up mother goose fairy tales...like irreversible damage to land...
The ironic part of this is the whole island is within a 50 mile radius of either Millstone in CT or Indian Point. If the impossible were to happen at one of those reactors, we'd be worse off than those within a 10 mile radius killed instantly. We may survive, but would most likely be exposed to extreme levels of radiiation and the horrific consequences that go with it.
Should have just operated the power plant. If there was ever a problem an escape route would have done no good anyway. But noo, we had the likes of Richie Kessel who took on Shoreham and LILCO, and became the LIPA and then NYPA chairman. (you dont think he had something to gain out of fighting those battles do you?)
Who were the winners? Kessel, and LILCO bondholders, thanks to Mario Cuomo (remember the name in Nov) who struck a deal that WE THE RATEPAYERS get the bill for the 'failed' endeavor. The debt should have been paid off strictly out of the proceeds of the LILCO sale to the state.
