Broadway in Rocky Point has improved recently with new construction and looks nicer just dont drive around those back roads where krack houses are dispersed.
The reason is Smithtown is very strict about single family houses being used as single family houses. I remember awhile back a young woman started a thread on this forum complaining about how she and 2 other professional singles were renting a 4BR/2BA home in Smithtown and the authorities made them move out because they were not part of a single family unit. The house was not overcrowded in the least, but the authorities would not put up with it.
My DH has been in the construction trades for years and many of his friends still do home improvements. One of his buddies just signed contracts to do basement/accessory apartments all in the same development in Smithtown.
My boss lives in a new upscale neighborhood in Smithtown & two of his neighbors are putting apartments in their basements. Desperate times call for desperate measures, very few areas will be immune.
back to the original topic, my town has one "famous" sketchy guy, he is actually harmless but a true fixture of Rt 25 in Ridge. "Cowboy" as he's know is a long haired, disabled guy that roams the street usually without a shirt this time of year picking up cans.
Other than that I can't think of anyone else sketchy in my area, now if I were to take a ride into Coram by the plaza that is a different story!
I've never been to Montreal but I've heard that it is not as clean as Toronto and the language issue there is a pain (difficult to live there permanently if you don't speak french). Toronto is a totally English speaking city and is much wealthier. It was orginally populated by the English and Scots and maintains those cultures sense of order (even though the population is very diverse now). Alot of Canada's elite moved there in the 70's from Montreal when Quebec started their move toward making Quebec a French-only speaking province.
Canada is a nice hybrid between American and European cultures. The weather is cold but tolerable (I guess it is to me, I grew up near Buffalo!). The climate in Toronto is similar to Chicago, Montreal is a bit colder than that.
I've been to Montreal several times and don't speak a lick of French. Everyone there speaks English as well. Also, unless things have changed in the past 5 years, it is SUPER clean. I likened it to a clean NYC.

The towns looking pretty good these day and has cleaned up quite a bit.
Is there some sketchy ...sure.
Sketchy is everywhere.
Compared to some of the other towns in Brookhaven.
I wouldnt trade it.

You guys are pretty unsketchy with the exception of Strathmore Ridge.

So what are you saying? Smithtown is now allowing more accessory apartments or that these people are just ignoring the law?
If Smithtown is allowing more apartments, I see your point, but if these people are building apartments that are illegal, I don't think Smithtown will give them a "pass" just because they are supposedly "desperate for money."

I'm saying neighborhoods that were not commonly known for having illegal apartments have them now too. I have no idea how Smithtown officials will address it.
